Catholic Theology

Biography

I am excited to teach at Scecina as a theology teacher. This will be the culmination of a lifetime of intellectual and religious/spiritual development. Much of my undergraduate work was focused on becoming a high school teacher. I delayed teaching to go to graduate school where I earned degrees in history and sociology. I’ve done some teaching at the university level but have spent the last ten years as a stay-at-home dad raising my two sons.

I am most of the way through an MA in theology at St. Meinrad. Catholic theology is a discipline where many of my intellectual interests converge, and teaching theology at the high school level will be the fulfillment of a lifelong calling.

I’ve lived in Danville, Indiana for the last nine years with my wife Laura, our sons Fionnegan (18) and Eamon (12), and a lot of cats. We enjoy travel and movies and good food.

Immediately after college, I worked as an analytical chemist at Superior Oil Company in Indianapolis for about four years. I began graduate school at IUPUI to pursue a doctorate in organic chemistry. My research was floundering, and God provided me the opportunity to leave with a master's degree and begin employment as a medicinal chemist at Eli Lilly and Co. After seven good years at Lilly, the pull to teach directed me to my current career. After completing my teaching certification at IWU, I went to Cathedral High School in Indianapolis to teach science. What never changed was the support of my family and our involvement in the Church wherever we went. My family ended up in the Dayton, Ohio, area. Once I graduated from the University of Dayton, I joined the Magis program through Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. This program, like Teach for America or Notre Dame’s ACE program, allowed me to live in a faith community with other teachers while I began my career teaching in Rapid City, South Dakota. I loved the beauty of South Dakota, increasing my knowledge of Native American culture, and the opportunity to explore my thespian side as the oral interpretation coach. I stayed there for six years. After a year as a substitute teacher in Dayton, I ended up in Indianapolis and at Scecina. I think Indianapolis is a great city, and I am grateful to be a part of the community of the Eastside.
