Scecina’s Class of 2020 receives diplomas in person during special Commencement
So that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects. Bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.
– Colossians 1:10 (Senior class Bible quote)
Scecina’s Class of 2020 and friends and family celebrated an in-person Commencement on July 16 at the school.
The Commencement had been postponed from the original May 22 date and was carefully planned over the past few months to be in compliance with COVID-19 health and safety protocols.
“I am grateful to the seniors, their parents, and their grandparents for their contributions to Scecina and for the wonderful difference they make in the world,” said Scecina President Joe Therber.
“When future generations look back upon calendar year 2020, these seniors and their families will be appreciated for their hope and perseverance during the unique and challenging era that we now call ‘COVID.’ Thank you, Class of 2020!”
Sean Gallagher, parent of graduate Michael Gallagher and a writer with the Archdiocese of Indianapolis newspaper, tweeted:
“@ScecinaNow Class of 2020 had a great commencement today. Delayed because of the coronavirus, they showed great spirit today, all of them (including my son Michael), true Crusaders!”
Valedictorian Bailey Sims (Butler University) and salutatorian Madison Beriault (LaSalle University) gave their traditional speeches. Each student was acknowledged personally to receive his or her Scecina diploma.
“In light of the pandemic, and our future, I encourage you to test positive in faith, keep distant from doubt, isolate from fear, and, most importantly, trust God through it all,” Bailey said in her speech.
Bailey also received the John J. Henninger Memorial Award for Christian Service. Seniors vote for five nominees and the Scecina staff then votes for one senior.
The Outstanding Senior Girl and Boy Awards, nominated and voted by Scecina staff, went to Alexis Carr (Hanover College) and Elijah Phillips (Marian University).
The Commencement ceremony recording is available for viewing at the link below. Because it’s a live recording, you may have to forward to 10:30 minutes into the video for the start of the Commencement ceremony: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bkzp_Yutk1s
