Scholarships for College-Bound and Current Scecina Students
Scecina Memorial High School is dedicated to supporting your child’s education. Below are some of the opportunities supported through the help of generous alumni and donors to make a Catholic education possible for your child at Scecina.
All scholarship application submissions must be submitted to Mrs. Magy Garcia in the President’s Office by Friday, February 14, 2025. Submit electronically to mgarcia@scecina.org.
First-Generation College Student Scholarship
$500 to $1,000
The Scecina Women’s Circle offers a scholarship ranging from $500 to $1,000 to a senior boy or girl in the Class of 2026 who plans to attend an institution of higher education and is the first in their family to pursue a college education.
The scholarship funds will be deposited into the recipient’s bursar account at their chosen college or university to assist with educational expenses.
- The funds shall be given to a Scecina graduating student.
- Student must plan to attend an institution of higher education.
- And is the first in their family to pursue a college education.
Eileen Hurrle Memorial College Scholarship
$750
When Eileen Hurrle died in 2018, her family and friends decided to honor her by establishing an endowed scholarship in her memory. Eileen was a member of “The Greatest Generation,” a generation characterized by personal responsibility, duty, honor and faith. She was a devoted wife and mother and a fervent fan of Scecina and its students.
The scholarship is intended for a student who has remained in good standing, shows a love for Scecina and its value, and is involved in extracurricular activities while attending Scecina Memorial High.
Application due: February 6, 2026
- The funds shall be given to a Scecina graduating student.
- Student must be attending an in-state four-year college beginning in the fall immediately after high school graduation.
The Kenneth R. Leffler Scholarship
$5,000
This scholarship is named in honor of Kenneth R. Leffler, who touched the lives of many in the community as a teacher, administrator, coach, and student mentor during his career at Scecina Memorial High School from 1966-1988. Scecina’s annual Golf Classic funds this scholarship.
The scholarship is presented each year to an outstanding incoming senior.
The amount will be $5,000 for the 2026-2027 school year.
Application due: February 6, 2026
- Student must be entering his or her senior year at Scecina.
- Student must be in the top 25% of his or her class.
- Student must be a child or grandchild of a Scecina alum.
- Student must be entering his or her senior year at Scecina.
- Student must be recommended by Scecina faculty or staff.
The Joe Ajamie Memorial Scholarship
Up to $1,800.
Joe Ajamie was a junior at Scecina Memorial High School when he died suddenly. He was a member of Little Flower Catholic Church and a graduate of Little Flower Catholic School.
Joe was an honor roll student at Scecina and involved in many extracurricular activities including tennis, volleyball, and CYO basketball. He was president of the freshman and sophomore classes.
A member of Scecina’s Guitar Club, Joe also participated in the spring musical and was lead singer and guitarist for the band Where’s the Cake?
An endowment was created in his honor through memorial donations.
The Joe Ajamie Memorial Scholarship honors Joe’s life and considerable musical talents. The scholarship supports an incoming senior student whose interests include music, who is performing well academically, and who is involved in at least one extracurricular activity.
Application due: February 6, 2026
- Student must be entering his or her senior year at Scecina.
- Student interests include music.
- Student who is performing well academically maintaining a minimum grade point average of “C” or higher.
- Student must be involved in at least one extracurricular activity.
Applicants must submit a written essay to the President’s Office on why they should be considered for the scholarship.
Rita Kriech Memorial Scholarship
$2,000
This scholarship was created by Rita’s three children, all Scecina graduates: Lucas Robinson ’03; Janine Robinson Riggs ’00; and Sara Robinson Bortz ’06.
Rita died on July 1, 2001, and her children wanted to establish this scholarship to honor their mother’s contribution to their lives.
The recipients are honored for devotion to personal accountability and development, which Rita felt were very important.
Scholarship applicants were required to complete an essay discussing why it is important to do their best, and, to date, how they have achieved their best. Applicants are also asked to submit anything additional that shows and celebrates a talent of which they are proud.

- Student must be entering his or her senior year at Scecina.
- Awarded to two students, preferably one girl and one boy.
The Sister Hortense Scholarship
$2,000
In the fall of 1994, Sister Hortense Fougerousse, a former Scecina principal and a Franciscan nun from Oldenburg, Indiana, donated funds to establish the Sister Hortense Scholarship Fund. These funds created an endowment, which means that they will provide a scholarship forever, according to Sister Hortense’s wishes.
Sister Hortense wished the scholarship be granted to a student who carries on the message of Father Thomas Scecina and former principal Father Harry Hoover, which is to “Give That Little Extra.”
The amount will be up to $2,000 for the 2026-2027 school year.

- Students must provide the documented need for tuition assistance.
Class of 1963 William F. Kuntz “WE CARE” Scholarship
The Class of 1963 established this scholarship in celebration of their 50th class reunion to honor Mr. William F. (Bill) Kuntz, who touched the lives of thousands during his many years of service to the Church, Scecina Memorial High School, and the Catholic Youth Organization. Many young lives were enriched and strengthened by a person who truly loved them, a character of absolute integrity, a leader of solid determination, and a man of great physical strength and ability.
Students will be nominated by faculty and staff. Nominations are due February 6, 2026
The scholarships will be awarded to one or more sophomore, junior, and/or senior students, preferably one or more boys and one or more girls who meet the scholarship criteria.
- Must be a student returning to Scecina for their sophomore, junior, or senior year.
- Demonstrate a caring attitude toward family, school, and community.
- Academically, they should be working to the best of their ability.
Patricia and Edward McCracken Scholarship
$1,000 to $2,000
The Patricia and Edward McCracken Scholarship is designed to honor the lives of Patricia (Kidwell) McCracken – Class of 1960, and her husband, Edward McCracken.
Dr. Sheila (Barton) Bosron, class of 1960, and Sheila’s husband, Dr. William Bosron, founded the scholarship. Patty and Sheila were first cousins, and both Little Flower Grade School graduates and Scecina Memorial High School.
This scholarship will be awarded to one or two incoming junior students, ranging from $1,000 to $2,000.
The student applying for this scholarship is asked to submit a brief essay describing how they have benefited from their first two years at Scecina.
Application due: February 6, 2026
- The student must be returning for his or her junior year.
- Student must be working academically to the best of his or her ability, and exhibiting an excellent behavioral pattern within the school.
- The student’s family must have completed all necessary registration and tuition assistance applications and must qualify for tuition assistance.
Theresa M. Teipen Scholarship
$1,000
This scholarship was esablished by the siblings of Theresa M. Teipen, a 1965 graduate of Scecina who died in 1988.
Applicants must submit a brief essay outlining their interest in science and why they chose Scecina as their high school.
The amount will be $1,000 for the 2026-2027 school year.
Application due: February 6, 2026
- The student must be returning for his or her junior year. Scholarship is possibly renewable for student’s senior year.
- Attended Scecina Memorial High School during their freshman and sophomore years.
- Maintained and continue to hold a 3.0 (B) GPA or better throughout their freshman and sophomore years. Continue to maintain academic requirements of (B) 3.0 GPA, work to the best of their ability, and display good civic behavior.
- Enrolled in AP or honors science courses and have a strong interest in pursuing a career in the science, medical, and biomedical fields, which may include, but are not limited to, nursing, physician, dentistry, or teaching in the science fields.
- Applicants are encouraged but not required to participate actively in extra-curricular activities while attending Scecina.
The Class of 1966 Academic Excellence Scholarship Endowment Fund
Up to $700
This endowment was created by members of the Class of 1966 for their 50th class reunion in 2016.
The Class of 1966 Academic Excellence Scholarship Endowment Fund is designed to reward the top academic student entering his or her senior year at Scecina. This scholarship is up to $700.
