Scecina students make one of the largest single donations to Community Hospital East Food Pantry

Scecina Memorial High School’s Student Council recently concluded its annual canned food drive, collecting over 2,500 cans of goods for the Community Hospital East Food Pantry.
A long-standing tradition at Scecina, the drive features a friendly competition among grade levels to bring in the most canned goods. This year, students dropped off donations each morning before school, showing their commitment to helping others in the community.

All donations were delivered to the Community Hospital East Food Pantry, which serves hospital patients in need and local residents through its community donation box. Student Council members also spent a day at the pantry, stocking shelves and organizing donations to support families directly.

According to Community Hospital East staff, Scecina’s donation is one of the largest single contributions the pantry has ever received.

Sophomore Ben Gonzalez-Esparza led the way, donating more than 700 can, this year’s largest individual contribution.

“I just really wanted to help make a difference,” Gonzalez-Esparza said. “I asked a bunch of my friends and family to help, and I was honestly surprised by how generous everyone was. And why not make the sophomores win!”

The effort reflects the foundation of a Catholic education—living the Gospel through service, compassion, and community.
